The Great PumpkinCheck out our first-ever Writing Center pumpkin! Finally: we have a pumpkin. Called "If the Writing Center Had a Fridge," the pumpkin design captures the spirit of the Writing Center. It features an original poem, for one; it also has other items tacked to it, like a staff photo and a paper that earned an A+ thanks to a great Writing Center consultation. Voting ends on Tuesday--and all proceeds go to the MVCC Library Scholarship Fund. The Writing Center: Now Open Saturdays!Get up and get some feedback!Check out our current
schedule, where you'll find new Saturday hours! We're open from

Hey, Students: Don't Think You Need "Help" with Your Writing? If you're thinking of it as "help," then maybe you've got the wrong idea about this place. The fact is, experienced writers recognize the point at which they know their own writing too well--when each sentence is practically memorized. That's when seasoned writers look to a fresh pair of eyes; they know that having someone read their writing "cold" will provide the perspective they need. That notion may be in contrast with the kind of help a less seasoned writer might seek out. Typically, the less experienced writer thinks he or she needs only editing advice. Where are the errors? such a writer might ask. What needs to be "fixed"? The Writing Center is more about making confident, experienced, stronger writers--writers who ask the "big" questions first: Is it interesting? Is it developed? Is it supported? Is it detailed? Is it graceful? Because of our specific mission, we see our staff as consultants, not "tutors." We feed back our impressions as readers so that you can make better choices about how to reach us--and by extension your teacher, your fellow students and even the world.
